Halifax is a beautiful town in the South Pennines. Its industrial heritage was initially focused on wool and textiles with the trading centred at the magnificent Piece Hall. Halifax is also home to the Quality Street chocolates along with the Halifax Bank. Halifax offers direct Rail services to Leeds and Manchester and the train to London Kings Cross takes at little as 3 hours.
Halifax has a vibrant social scene, with restaurants and bars focused around the recently renovated Piece Hall, described by Architecture Today as “one of the most striking piazzas in Europe”. Theatre goers can chose between the Victoria theatre, The Playhouse and Square Chapel Arts Centre all of whom welcome acts from around the world.
The buildings in Halifax reflect the growth of the town during the industrial revolution and use of local Yorkshire stone. Particular highlights include the afore mentioned Piece Hall, Halifax’s Town Hall, designed by Charles Berry who also designed the Houses of Parliament and Dean Clough, formerly home of the one of the worlds Largest carpet mills at half a mile long. Dean Clough has now been converted to house office, bars, restaurants, retail and a hotel. Halifax also boasts the world tallest folly, standing at 275ft, Wainhouse Tower is a local landmark which is open to the public on bank holidays to try and conquer the 369 steps to the lower viewing platform.
The Shay stadium is home to both football and rugby league, with Halifax Town FC and Halifax RLFC respectively, there are also several nearby golf courses, the Halifax Ski and Snowboard Centre and Halifax Sailing Club, the highest in England at 1350ft above sea level.
The land registry data indicates that over the last 10 years average house prices of detached property locally have risen by almost 30%. The premium property threshold* for Yorkshire and The Humber currently stands at a little over £400,000.
Halifax and the surrounding areas have a variety of schooling options. In the private system Rishworth School and Hipperholme Grammar both offer through schooling options taking children from age 3 through to 18 and 16 respectively, there are also a prep school at The Gleddings, in Skircoat Green, taking children from ages 3 to 11. The state schools locally operate a selective admissions system with two grammar schools, Crossley Heath and North Halifax Grammar using the 11+ results to determine entry.
